With the New Year just around the corner I thought it would be appropriate to talk about New Year's resolutions. Have you made yours yet? Year after year we make them, but do we actually stick with them for the ENTIRE year? Do you even remember what they were? What I want to suggest for 2011 is to write you resolutions down in your journal, on your calendar, or your fridge to constantly remind you about them. Also, try to make it something worth your while and plan a reward for yourself if you make it that far. Another suggestion, which may be more feasible for some, would be to make a 6 month resolution and then when you reach that goal then add to it or make another 6 month resolution. It may help to not spread your resolution over the entire year, because let's face it, unless it is super easy, who keeps a resolution for the entire year!?! Remember, resolutions are supposed to be something that would be challenging to give up. Pick something you know would better your body, mind and soul. Here are some suggestions for fitness related resolutions. When you pick your resolutions, try to write them out with all the specifics to avoid cheating on them!
1. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. (Especially if you work on the 3rd floor or above!)
2. If you have a dog, take it for a walk everyday. (If you don't have a dog I recommend having one. It is a great reason to get out of the house and exercise!)
3. Pack a homemade healthy lunch at least 3 times each week.
4. Keep a water bottle at your desk, or with you throughout the day, and refill it 2-3 times.
5. Eat fish, such as salmon or tuna, three times per week to get a healthy dose of omega-3's. (You can take fish oil capsules if you don't prefer fish)
6. Take up an activity, such as a dance class, fitness class or cooking clas, that you have been wanting to try.
7. Limit your treats to one small portion per day or per week (remember, if you do this one make sure to customize it to what you think will challenge you).
8. Keep track of you fitness and nutrition goals daily in a journal.
9. Purchase sessions with a personal trainer so you go to the gym regularly and have a someone to keep you accountable and on track with your goals.
10. Avoid processed foods and choose fresh and nutrient dense foods such as fruits and vegetables!
