I was sitting around thinking about my clients, something I always do, and I found a commonality. In trying to motivate clients, the one hurdle that I find keeps people from accomplishing their goals is sacrifice. In order to make life change, one must be able to make sacrifice. The definition of sacrifice is giving up of something valuable or important for somebody or something else considered to be of more value or importance. You sacrifice vacation to work long hours on a job; you sacrifice your finances to buy things you can’t afford; you sacrifice your time to do activities you don’t enjoy. Sacrifice should have a positive result otherwise it’s just plain old insanity. There are many outside social factors that contribute to the way we value many aspects of our life, but when it comes to health many of us find it of high importance but aren’t willing to sacrifice those less valuable parts of our lives to get it. Sacrificing is not always easy but it doesn’t have to be complicated. It may be sacrificing the old way of doing things, for instance sacrificing and hour of TV so you can cook meals for a week, or sacrificing a night out on the town so that you can get eight hours of sleep. Although, the word sacrifice can be scary, the key is to make focus on the end goal or the positive outcome.
1) Write down 3 goals that you would like to accomplish over the next 3 months (be specific, getting healthier is not an appropriate goal)
2) Now decide on a level of 1-10 (1 being low priority and 10 extremely important)
3) Take goal with the highest priority and get rid of the other two. (keep it simple)
4) Now write down what actions you can take to accomplish that goal.
5) Each week check in with yourself or your accountability partner to make sure you are staying the course
6) Celebrate your success completion with something fun (rewards that do not involve eating or drinking, find something else)
A little sacrifice goes a long way, so try it!
