Pass the H2O!

Did you know that your body is made up of more than 60% water? Your muscles and brain tissue are even more- 70-75%! Every single function that occurs within your body requires water for optimal performance.

So what?

WATER IS IMPORTANT! It helps you maintain healthy skin, it improves muscle tone, it encourages digestive health, it increases your metabolic rate and it helps you feel satisfied with less food.

So, how much water have you had today?

Traditional wisdom says that we need to consume eight to ten, 8oz glasses fluid per day. The problem with this estimate is that it is a very (VERY) broad estimate. According to this old wisdom, if you are a 100 lb teenage girl or a 400 lb adult male, you should both be taking in the same amount of water. That just doesn’t make sense! While drinking the traditional eight 8 oz glasses of water per day would be a good start, there’s more to it than that.

So, how much water should you be drinking? Well, the simple answer is that there IS no simple answer. It depends on several factors- from how much you are working out, to how hot it is outside, to what type of diet you are eating. However, using some tools (and a tiny bit of math), we can get a firmer grasp on our H2O needs for optimal weight loss and fitness.

Here is an equation to help you get on the right track:

Non-workout days: body weight x 0.5 = ounces of water you should drink that day.

Workout days: body weight x 0.7 = ounces of water you should drink that day.

Example: I weigh 240 lbs, so I would need the following for a workout day- 240 x 0.7= 168 ounces (that is 21 8oz glasses!)

Of course if you haven’t been drinking much water lately, this will be an adjustment. It may take some will power and some planning, but to operate at a high level and achieve those fitness goals you’ve set…isn’t it worth it? Of course it is!

*One word of caution: it IS possible to have too much water. Do not drink more than the 0.7 x body weight without consulting a physician or fitness/nutrition specialist.
